Members of the local Marie Curie Cancer Care Machars Fundraising Group achieved their long service awards recently.

Jayne Whannel, Jackie Scott
and Alison Gibbon have committed five years’ voluntary ser-
vice to help raise funds and promote the local Marie Curie Nursing Service. They were presented with their awards by David Cameron, Marie Curie fundraising area manager for southern Scotland.

The Machars Fundraising Group was formed six years ago by local Marie Curie senior healthcare assistant and chairman Derek McIlwraith.

In that time the group has gone from strength to strength, raising more than £70,000 which is spent locally to provide Marie Curie nurses free of charge to terminally-ill patients in their own homes.

Derek said it was important the volunteers are regonised for their hard work and dedication, as all the group members work hard as a great team to ensure all events are successful but fun. He added that he looked forward to the group going from strength to strength over the next five years.

Marie Curie Nursing Service in Dumfries and Galloway is a vital part of the community and as the number of patients and families requiring the service year on year increases Marie Curie have to raise funds. The Machars Fundraising Group is looking for new volunteers. If you are interested contact Sheila on 01573 224440.
