Virus hits Stranraer hospital

The Garrick Ward at the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer has been closed to admissions and transfers due to a total of 12  patients and five staff presenting with symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, clinically consistent with norovirus infection.

The ward is not formally closed to visitors and visitors are encouraged to observe the hand hygiene measures.

But anyone who suspects they may have any symptoms of norovirus – also known as the winter vomiting bug – is asked not to visit.

According to Dr Martin Connor, consultant microbiologist who chairs the Outbreak Control meetings: “Norovirus is prevalent in  our local communities and what we are seeing in our hospitals is a reflection of  what is happening out there  in the community and elsewhere in Scotland.

“Our staff are working hard to deal with the outbreak and its effects on our patients, and we are implementing all appropriate infection control procedures.”
