UK’s 28th ‘coolest’ town is in Galloway

Kirkcudbright has been named as one of the UK’s “coolest places to live” in a national newspaper survey.

The Artists’ Town ranked among 30 fashionable places such as Stockbridge in Edinburgh, Jesmond in Newcastle, Glastonbury and Brixton.

The list in The Times on Tuesday was topped by Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, but Kirkcudbright came in at number 28 thanks to its apparent “quaint atmosphere and wonderful light”.

The list’s author added: “Kirkcudbright’s artistic bent is obvious the minute you walk its streets.” The town’s summer festivities programme even heralded a mention.

Kirkcudbright’s links to art stem from its famous residents over the years such as E A Hornel, Jessie M King and her husband,
E A Taylor, and Charles
Oppenheimer. It was also a summer retreat for poet Robert Burns.
