Top Army Cadet in the West Lowlands of Scotland

A SORBIE teenager has been awarded a top title from the Commandant of the West Lowland Battalion Army Cadet Force, Colonel Kevin Connor TD.
Grace Aspden, 17, took the Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major badge for 2012 recently - a real honour for a cadet.
The West Lowland Battalion Army Cadet Force has just short of 150 officers and adults instructors and more than 700 cadets, both male and female. It has no fewer than 33 detachments in Ayrshire, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire as well as Dumfries & Galloway.
Grace takes over from Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major Craig Richmond (18) from Crosshouse near Kilmarnock.
Grace has been in the Newton Stewart detachment for around five years. She passed her 4 Star course with a regular army unit that assesses both knowledge and ability to instruct in April 2011, gaining the award of “top student” on the course. She also completed a leadership course in 2011 that takes the cream of the organisation to teach them to lead in a variety of situations.
Earlier this year, she headed to Frimley Park in Surrey, the national training centre for the Army Cadet Force. There she passed her Master Cadet course, a standard only achieved by around 40 cadets annually, out of 48,000 army cadets nationally.
