Three fatalities reported at Jim Clark Rally

Tragedy has struck the Jim Clark rally in the Scottish Borders today with Police Scotland confirming three spectators were killed after a rally car hit them.

Others injured in the incident were taken to hospital, some in a critical condition.

The police said the fatalities happened at 4pm but in an earlier, separate incident, at around 2pm, five spectators were injured by a rally car. Four were treated at the scene and one was taken to hospital.

Police Scotland said the event had been cancelled with immediate effect.

The annual rally takes place over three days on closed roads in the Duns and Kelso areas of the Borders, with many rally enthusiasts from Galloway taking part.

It is held in honour of the late Formula 1 champion Jim Clark, who died while motor racing in Hockenheim, Germany, in 1968.
