The show goes on despite deluge
AS the unrelenting rain tipped down on the showfield, Jennifer Hyslop, winner of the Champion of Champions prize at Wigtown Show, declared last Wednesday “the best day ever!”
The sodden organisers of the annual event may not have phrased it exactly like that, but the vanguard of the local farming community had turned out with the cream of their livestock to support the show and salvage the most dreadful of days, weather wise.
To top it all, the guest of honour, BBC weather girl Cat Cubie - ironically - was unavoidably delayed due to a tragic incident involving her train.
With 40mm of rain falling, Bladnoch Park’s walkways and arenas quickly turned into rivers of mud. However, farmers who have endured a wash-out summer simply pulled on their wellies and water proofs and got on with the job. The most repeated comment of the day was: “Well, you can’t choose the weather!” The camaraderie was in evidence as everyone helped to free trucks, tractors and trailers stuck in the morass.
Up in North Ayrshire, Miss Cubie, due to present the prizes, was decanted to another train and a car was despatched to collect her at Ayr in a race against time to get her to the show. She arrived about an hour after the prizes had been resented by former show secretary Elaine Ramsay, who handed over the Craig Cup to a delighted Jennifer Hyslop, of Balluskie Farm , Barrhill. Jennifer was showing her pride and joy, 18-month-old Limousin cross heifer Hightown Fantasy.
After Jennifer had place a heartfelt kiss on the winner’s head, she announced this was “The best day ever!” She added that the victory was especially sweet as they had been in the reserve berth last year. Hightown Fantasy has already won at the Highland Show, the Yorkshire Show and Stranraer Show.
Show secretary Helen McColm posted on her Facebook page afterwards: “We wondered how to follow last year’s bicentenary show. Well, this one was certainly different and very memorable! As everyone battled through a very soggy showfield and spells of heavy rain I was overwhelmed by the spirit. It really was a “make the best of it’ type of day. There were lots of challenges and difficulties but I thank everyone who supported Wigtown Show, the numerous trade and stock exhibitors and the many volunteers who gave up their time and worked tirelessly.
“It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves regardless. To top it all, Cat Cubie, our special guest, got caught up in the train incident near Irvine. However, rather than give up and go home, she, with the help of our volunteer driver, was in the showfield by 3pm, just a few hours later than planned and was a lovely guest.
“Thanks to Elaine Ramsay for stepping in at the last minute to present the trophies. Phew! What a day! Roll on next year!”
Show chairman Ross McKie said: “It was amazing how many people came up to say to me what a great time they were having! There were very few complaints. In the showfield, the young handlers got the worst of it but they were all dressed for the weather.
“We had tractors on hand to pull people out of the mud and most of the trade stands needed help to get out as they were at the bottom of the field, but everyone just entered into the spirit of the thing!
“The gate taking will be affected but I was just amazed at the number of the people who turned up to support the show!”
Hightown Fantasy, from Hyslop and Richardson, won the James Craig Perpetual Cup for the most outstanding exhibit in the show, having won the Commercial Cattle Championship. The Reserve to the Champion was the Holstein Champion, Barledziew Shottle Candy, shown by Emma Vance, from HF Vance and Company, Low Barledziew, Sorbie. Well-known stock expert Robert Forsyth from Whithorn took his time to go round the line-up of the best of the breeds standing in the rain. The time he took to study each individual champion indicated the quality of the livestock on parade. The tension was cranked up to Olympic levels before Robert, with a nod of his head and a flick of his crook, finally indicated he had chosen the Commercial Cattle Champion as the winner.
