Best Christmas tree grower Mike Craig will now supply No 10 Downing Street with their tree for the festive season.

Best Christmas tree grower Mike Craig will now supply No 10 Downing Street with their tree for the festive season.

A Christmas tree grower from Galloway has scooped the top prize in a national tree competition and will now deliver a 16ft 6in tree to take up residence outside 10 Downing Street.

Mike Craig, of Garrocher Tree Farm, Creetown, won the coveted title of Champion Christmas Tree Grower 2012 at the 14th Annual British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association (BCTGA) competition at the Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead on October 30.

Mike will now have the honour of delivering an outdoor Christmas tree to stand outside 10 Downing Street in London this December.

Mike said: “We’re delighted to win such a prestigious award – it makes all the hard work we put into growing our trees so worthwhile. We can’t wait to visit Downing Street and see the tree stand outside one of the UK’s most famous residences.”

Harry Brightwell, secretary for the BCTGA, added: “Our tree competition is always popular with our members and this year was no different. The standard of the entries this year was extremely high but Mike presented a fabulous tree that met the judging criteria perfectly. We’re looking forward to seeing him deliver a tree to Downing Street to bring some festive spirit to all those who visit No 10.”

The BCTGA was established in 1979 to provide a quality standard for Christmas tree growers in the UK and champions the purchase of real sustainable Christmas trees.
