PROPOSALS for a new £10m supermarket - which has been confirmed as an Asda, Morrisons or Tesco - which will bring 150 jobs went on display today (Friday).

The plans for land by the electricity substation near Barnkirk, put forward by developers CWP Group, show 160 car parking spaces, a filling station, delivery area and a site entrance from the Barnkirk Road.

The Cinema in Newton Stewart was the venue for the display, which was opened up to press and councillors at 10am before the public viewing at 11am.

James Harbison, spokesman for the group, told The Gazette: “We are aware there may be opposition from high street traders but we have managed to handle this well with previous developments of a smiliar nature and have agreed a situation which suits everyone.

“For example, in Dunbar we completed an Asda with a filling station but agreed that payment would only be by automated card machines and no cash - which allowed the town’s filling station to continue trading well by taking all cash payment.

“We would be looking at compromises like this.”

A detailed planning application should be before councillors within the next two months.
