Supermarket application delayed

A NEW supermarket for Newton Stewart is likely to be delayed after a hold-up with the initial planning application.

Developers CWP have still to lodge a complete application, which will include a retail impact assessment and correspondence from townsfolk, as they are ensuring every detail is in place to avoid further hold-ups down the line.

The supermarket, designated for land at Barnkirk, split the town of Newton Stewart and caused controversy when it was first suggested, with some feeling it would take trade away from the centre.

However, support was given for the idea from some locals who felt competition and choice should be brought to the town. Suggestions had put the opening of the supermarket early next year if all applications were approved, but this will now be put back pending the outcome.
