Stranraer Sheriff Court round-up

A KIRKCUDBRIGHT man who admits shouting and swearing at police officers outside a Newton Stewart pub last November was set to defend himself on Monday when his lawyer failed to show up.

But Sheriff Kenneth Robb postponed sentencing Andrew Higgins, 28, of St Mary Street, to give his solicitor a chance to defend his client.

Higgins claimed he had been in contact with his solicitor and couldn’t explain why he wasn’t in court to defend him against the charges, which also include one of obstructing officers in their duties whilst attempting to search him.

The case will call again in March

A WHITHORN man who caused £300 worth of damage to a car has been ordered to undertake 70 hours of unpaid work.

Scott Hoodless, 23, of St John Street admitted recklessly kicking the offside wing mirror and panel of a car on Main Street, Isle of Whithorn on 17 December.

Lawyer Paul Feeney told Stranraer Sheriff Court on Tuesday that Hoodless had been involved in “a carry on” with his brother the previous evening and had woken up in a bad mood and taken it out on the car. He added that Hoodless had brought the £300 to court to pay for the damages.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb told Hoodless that making the effort to bring the cash to court goes a long way.

A 23-year old Port William man avoided jail this week for his part in assaulting a man on a Newton Stewart street.

Following an earlier two-day trial, Kenneth Kiltie of Dourie Drive in the village was found guilty of repeatedly punching Michael Caines on the head and body causing him to fall and then repeatedly kicking him on Albert Street last July.

Lawyer Paul Feeney said Kiltie was a hard worker with an “occasional offending” record.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb told Kiltie he would allow him to keep his job and fined Kiltie a total of £1000.
