Stranraer hospital ward closed

A WARD at Stranraer's Galloway Community Hospital continues to be closed to new patients following four outbreaks of C-Diff.

Nurse director Hazel Borland took the decision to close the ward last Thursday following the outbreak, which has left one patient in particular being described by NHS staff as 'unwell'.

An NHS spokesman said: "The decision to close was taken on the advice of the NHS Board's Infection Control Doctor following confirmation of a third case of clostridium difficile in the ward within a 7 - 10 day time period.

"Appropriate infection control measures are in place and the situation is being monitored closely on a daily basis by the Board's Infection Control staff."

Two of the three patients have been symptom-free for a period of 48 hours and none of the three patients have been seriously unwell, but as a precaution all three have been in isolation .

The spokesman added: "It is expected that a further meeting of the Board's Infection Control Team will take place to review the situation and advise on the way ahead."
