Stranraer Show 2010 Results

A COUPLE of showers of rain did little to dampen down to enthusiasm of the thousands of people that attended the 166th Stranraer Show on Wednesday.

Cool and dry conditions early in the morning gave way to a steady drizzle, but by the parade of champions the sun was shining on the colourful scene at London Road Playing Fields.

Show Chairman Martyn Hastings said: "The show went very well with the attendance about the same as last year. I'm very pleased with how thing went.

"The biggest attraction was the Cook, Won't Cook demonstration (when Lord Stair took on Stranraer FC manager Keith Knox). The marquee was just chock-a-block with people.

"The livestock was of a very high standard, especially the Clydesdales, which were the best we've had for a long time.

"Everyone there seemed to enjoy themselves and it was nice to see so many smiling faces".

Notable successes in the show ring were Jim and Fiona Burns from Craignell farm, New Galloway, whose ewe was declared the top Blackface. Fiona said she was "delighted" with the result.

Wallace Parker's Scotch Mule won the supreme championship for that breed, while JL McMillan, Carse of Cleary, Newton Stewart had the top Texel.

Tom McKinnel from Drumneil Farm near Mochrum won the Cattle section's Native Beef Championship, while the best Ayrshire went to Charles and Shirley Service, Moorpark, Sandhead.

Anne Jolly, from Calgow Equestrian continued her successful summer by winning the Best Ridden Light Horse section on Macy Grey.

In the goat section, popular breeder, Nancy McCreath from Newtonhill, Kirkinner, won the supreme championship.

With trade, refreshment and craft stands doing a steady trade throughout the day the annual Stranraer and Rhins of Galloway Agricultural Society Limited goes from strength to strength.
