Steps taken to bring Robert the Bruce heritage centre to Galloway

PLANS are afoot for a Robert the Bruce Heritage Centre near the site of one of Galloway’s most historic events.

The area around Glentrool could become home to a shrine to the famous Scottish king who led his troops to victory in a battle at Loch Trool as part of the Wars of Independence in 1307.

Now history buff Barry Donnan, who has a holiday home at Glentrool but lives in Ayrshire, has officially registered the Robert the Bruce Society as a charity and is beginning the long process of fundraising for the heritage centre.

He said this week: “Our aim is to promote the life of Robert the Bruce and celebrate his links with both South Ayrhsire and Galloway, and where better than somewhere near the border?

“We are now registered and have support of some of the locals who will help with fundraising events and we will begin the massive task of researching and looking for all sorts of funding.”

Robert the Bruce is known locally by the huge stone erected in his memory at Loch Trool and also by a smaller stone at Clatteringshaws Loch. But he is said to have lived in the glens of south west Scotland for many years, and originally belonged to South Ayrshire where his mother was Countess of Carrick. It is thought he was born at Turnberry Castle or Crossraguel Abbey. You can follow the progress at www.facebook.com/RoberttheBruceKingofScots
