Stena commit to Cairnryan

ELECTED representatives across Galloway welcomed this week's news that Stena Line are to create a new £200million ferry port at Cairnryan.

The much anticipated move by Stena up the coast from Stranraer was officially confirmed by the Scottish Government on Wednesday when they approved a Harbour Empowerment Order.

The 20-month constuction phase will provide employment for 900.

The move to the Old Port site will cut down the crossing time to Ireland and will allow the project to regenerate the Stranraer Waterfront to move forward.

A 28-acre site two miles north of Cairnryan has been chosen to locate the facility which will be constructed to accommodate a mix of travel and freight customers all year round.

The investment also includes the addition of two large modern ferries when the port becomes fully operational on its Irish Sea service to Belfast Port.

First Minister Alex Salmond said: "This new development will safeguard and create 1,400 jobs and trigger significant investment in Dumfries and Galloway. I am delighted to welcome the decision to approve this project and Stena Line's commitment and continuing contribution to the Scottish economy."
