Sign language comes to schools
SORBIE and Garlieston Primary schools took part in the Learn to Sign Week campaign this week.
Children at the schools learned one phrase of British Sign Language (BSL) a day for each day during Learn to Sign Week.
Sorbie Primary School received a visit from Deaf BSL users, John and Catherine Denerley. John Denerley is a local resident and also Chair of the Scottish Deaf Association. John told the children a bit more about Deaf people and sign language and also helped them practice finger spelling their names!
Over 2,000 school children across Scotland are involved in Learn to Sign Week. By the end of the week children will be able to sign a basic conversation with their classmates.
Learn to Sign Week is about encouraging people to learn some basic sign language. The BDA doesn't expect everyone to be fluent but to try and learn some basic sign language to make communication between hearing and Deaf people easier for everyone.
