Police warning over new drugs ahead of Wickerman Festival

JUST days before one of Scotland’s biggest music festival kicks off near Kirkcudbright, police have warned revellers over the misuse of a new type of drug.

New Psychoactive substances have become popular with party-goers nationwide lately but with the Wickerman Festival attracting an expected 20,000 people to the area on Friday, police say people have no way of knowing what they could be taking at the family event.

Inspector Amanda Scott, Community Safety Inspector, Galloway Division said: “We do recognise that the Wickerman Festival 2012 is a family event however it would be amiss of us if we and our partners did not alert the public about the significant dangers of the overindulgence of substance use. We have seen elsewhere of the horrific consequences that are apparent and along with the Wickerman festival organisers we would like to ensure Wickerman 2012 is enjoyable experience for all.”

Barbara Zaman, Community Engagement Officer of the Dumfries and Galloway Alcohol and Drug Partnership added: “Substances can affect everybody in a different way and what might be okay for your friend may not be okay for you. Be aware of the risks of taking psychoactive substances (aka legal highs) as there is no way of knowing what you are getting when you take any substance - there is also an increased risk of overdose if you mix drugs with alcohol. There will be a voluntary breath test initiative available on the Saturday and Sunday morning for anyone thinking of driving off the site.”

DC Scott Jardine, Substance Misuse Coordinator for Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said: “We would like to remind festival attendees that new psychoactive substances are sold as bath salts, plant food etc and just because they are legal does not mean they are harmless. On occasions these substances can be as strong if not stronger than the substance they are trying in imitate.”
