Police target drink drivers
THE police have this week vowed to tackle the increasing numbers of drink drivers in Dumfries and Galloway.
A total of 32 people have been caught in the opening two months of the year, compared with 31 in 2012 and only 21 who were caught in the same period in 2011. This is a rise of more than 52% for the corresponding two months of 2011.
The issue seems to be particularly bad in the west side of the region, though there have been incidences throughout Dumfries and Galloway.
Despite high profile warnings and frequent police patrols at problem areas, some drivers appear not to care about their own lives and the lives of others and continue to break the law.
Roads policing officers say they are determined to tackle this disgraceful behaviour directly and have promised to increase patrols further until they notice a downward trend of the figures. Motorists are being warned that this unsatisfactory and criminal behaviour will not be tolerated and reminded that it is only a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously injured as a result of drink driving.
Drink driving has been a force priority for a number of years as it directly affects road safety. Clearly the majority of the public now agree that it is unacceptable as police have been receiving increased numbers of calls.
Officers say they are thanking these callers and are encouraging the public to continue this support and call in if they suspect someone of drink driving. With a call, the public can make the road safer and possibly save lives.
Inspector Neil Hewitson, head of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “Disappointing is not the word – it has to be disbelief. For years now drivers have been told of the consequences of drinking and driving.
“Everyone has seen the campaigns, and we have all heard the news stories of the tragic repercussions. It devastates families, it destroys lives and can ruin careers – all for what? A moment of stupidity.
“We have been extremely fortunate that this spate of unacceptable driving has only brought minor injuries. How many warnings do these drivers need?
“Drink driving is a serious offence and the courts treat it as that. If you are caught you can expect a ban, a heavy fine, increased insurance premiums and, in some cases, be ordered to re-sit your test.
“If you are a repeat offender or are over twice the limit, you will also be kept in police custody. The message is simple: don’t drink and drive – it is simply not worth it.”
