Playmakers graduate with new skills

Over 100 youngsters recently graduated to become young leaders following the launch of a young leadership programme in Wigtownshire schools called Playmakers.

Through Sports Leaders UK, Playmakers was delivered by Active schools and community support officers and supported by teachers and parents within the schools. The children learned how to organise people and things for school, community, clubs and home.

A Dumfries and Galloway spokeman said: “The number of excellent programmes and activities the children carried out was inspirational with some setting up lunch clubs for the younger children to take part in, some planned nature walks for family and friends. Some helped mentor smaller children in and out of school.”

Head teacher Mrs Hamilton said: “The Playmakers award has helped the children become more independent, given them more confidence in their own abilities and given them the skills needed to work as part of a team and if needed take the lead/responsibility to make decisions. It has also helped them to think about their actions and to be good role models for younger pupils.”

The Playmakers programme is going to be rolled out again this upcoming academic year to P5-P7 pupils.
