Plans in hand for Stranraer Lowland Gathering

A LONG lost tradition is set to make a dramatic comeback to Stranraer this summer.

Preparations are underway for a Stranraer Lowland Gathering which will bring back memories from the 80s for many in the town.

Ronnie Brown found himself lost in nostalgia, remembering the days of pipe band competitions in the town followed by marching through the streets with families turning out in their droves to see the sight.

This spurred him into making enquiries about bringing this day back onto Stranraer’s calendar.

So now, after over a year in the making, he and a committe - formed last April - will bring the Stranraer Lowland Gathering to the town’s London Road Playing fields on 13 July.

Ronnie said: “A lot has happened in this past year, with fundraising events being held to to cover the cost of the event. The support of local people has been fantastic with offers of help coming in from near and far.

“The last fundraiser was on Saturday 23 February when the committee, with the help of Stranraer Senior Section of the Girl Guides, packed bags in Morrison’s and raised £747 through donations from the public.”

The Stranraer Lowland Gathering will soon be here and this is intended as the first of many annual competitions. The first event is open to pipe bands from Grades 2, 3, and 4, and will also host a Drum Major competition.

Ronnie added: “However, it is hoped that as each year passes we will be able to build on the competition and extend it to all grades of pipe bands and introduce solo piping events.

“We also hope to recreate the spectacle of yesteryear by having a parade through the town after the prize giving.”

Applications are now being taken for Trade and Craft Stands and these forms are available from the website www.stranraerlowlandgathering.org or by contacting Ronnie Brown on 07899045955.
