Planning case to be heard for 13 houses in village

PLANNERS have recommended that two planning applications be granted to allow 13 new houses to be built in the small coastal village of Monreith.

But the mixture of single- and one-and-a-half-storey homes has caused anger among villagers, who feel the plans, put forward by social housing association Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership, will be out of keeping with
the typical Galloway cottage style of the Machars village.

A total of 20 separate objections were received by the council to the plans ahead of next Wednesday’s meeting to decide for or against the developments, which could see the current population of around 70 rise to more than 100.

Three houses are destined for land beside the current local authority homes at St Medan’s, and will be developed as an extension to these.

Other main points of
concern among the objec-
tions submitted include
increased traffic, lack of
entertainment for youngsters in the predominantly pensioner-inhabited village, poor public transport links, lack of employment opportunities and the
“urban design” of the
proposed houses conflicting with existing properties. But planners and roads consultees say there have been no road accidents recorded here in the past nine years and that there is a high demand for affordable housing in the Machars.

The issue will be debated by the region’s councillors, including those from Wigtownshire, in Dumfries next week.
