Petition launched for crossing at housing estate

A PETITION has been launched and supported by political figures for a crossing on a busy Castle Douglas road.

MSP Alex Fergusson and newly elected Councillor Finlay Carson along with MP Russell Brown have backed the campaign by residents of the Whitelaw Estate in Castle Douglas for a pelican crossing to ensure the safety of pedestrians when crossing the A745 Castle Douglas to Dalbeattie road.

Speaking after signing the petition, which has been organised by Peter McLatchie of Whitelaw Avenue, Alex Fergusson said: “I applaud Mr McLatchie’s efforts in raising this campaign. The Council has permitted the development of this housing estate, and built a walkway for pedestrians on the opposite side of the A745, even sign posting the way to Castle Douglas Primary School. Yet there is no protection for the approximately 100 children who live in the estate to cross that road, and that is unacceptable. I am happy to support this campaign along with Councillor Carson – this is a basic issue of road safety, and that should make it a top priority.

Finlay Carson added that he was due to meet with council officials to discuss possible improvements.MP Russell Brown said that he had no hesitation in backing the campaign.

He added: “I have also raised this with the Council’s Roads Department and they assure me that they recognise the difficulties with the footpath being on the other side of the road to the school. Children having to cross this main road face very real dangers on a daily basis and I share the deep concerns of local families. The Council have said that they will take a close look at the request for a pedestrian crossing.”
