Parents voice concern over schools

Parents across Wigtownshire have been turning out to parent council meetings to air their views about the council’s latest proposals for cluster schools.

As part of the Cluster Working Review, the idea of sharing headteachers to save costs was one proposal that had raised concerns among parents.

There have been meetings of parent councils at Wigtown, Whithorn, Port William and Kirkinner recently.

And Whithorn and Wigtown Parent Council groups issued a joint statement saying: “The majority of the local parent councils were represented in the Wigtown County Buildings on Tuesday night for a lively discussion regarding the proposed link in shared headships of primary schools across our region.

“Representatives of the Cluster Working Review (CWR) gave a presentation which was followed by group discussions. All parties present were able to put their views forward which we hope will be gathered together and fed back to schools, parent councils and local councillors in due course.

“We were informed that the details have not yet been finalised, and that this is the start of a 16-week consultation process. We would, therefore, encourage all parents to contact the CWR directly by emailing CWR@dumgal.gov.uk with their thoughts and concerns but to also contact their parent councils with their opinions.”

Dumfries and Galloway Council began its review of sustaining small schools last week, and a meeting will be
held in Penninghame Primary School next Wednesday from 3.30-5.30pm and 6pm-8pm for parents to give their views.

Dumfries and Galloway Council is looking to shave £27 million from its budget over the next three years.
