Newton 3G pitch gets thumbs up from councillors
Newton Stewart will have a 3G pitch by this time next year after the council pledged £275,000 towards the £500,000 cost at a meeting of the policy and resources committee on Wednesday in Dumfries.
The facility will be created at Blairmount Park by the council in partnership with Newton Stewart Football Club to develop their current pitch, which is adjacent to the Douglas Ewart High School to ensure wider community and curricular use.
The funding from the council will be topped up by a £225,000 contribution from Sportscotland.
Mid Galloway Councillor Graham Nicol said: “The Conservative/SNP administration is very keen to improve sporting facilities across the region and this is the next stage in introducing 3G pitches to our communities. We already have 3G pitches in Stranraer, Dumfries and Annan and these have proved very successful.
“Hopefully, at next week’s planning and environment committee these will be passed and onsite by the end of the incoming financial year. These facilities should be open to all potential users as it is essential that they are used to their maximum capacity, including by the school and youth teams.”
