Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for South Scotland and health spokesperson Jim Hume MSP has called on Dumfries and Galloway Council to “get a grip” over financial a overspend.
Commenting on news that Labour-run Dumfries and Galloway Council’s social work department is running at a £400,000 overspend, he said: “Dumfries and Galloway Council has been warned repeatedly since 2012 by external auditors that there are significant failings in the financial management of its social work budget.
“The council has had plenty of time to deal effectively with this budget crisis, but despite promises to fix it the overspend is still running at £400,000 and the council is still looking to cut costs. People will rightly be concerned about what this means for services.
“The council needs to get a grip on the significant failings in its financial management of the social work department and provide assurances that services will not suffer as a result.”
