MSP criticises college cash plans
JIM Hume, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for South Scotland, has criticised the SNP government for planning to slash a further £34 million out of the college budget at a time when unemployment remains far too high and demand for college places is outstripping supply.
Figures obtained by the Scottish Liberal Democrats show that in the 2012/13 academic year, 145 student applications were rejected across Dumfries and Galloway.
Jim Hume said: “The SNP have ploughed on with damaging reforms to colleges despite the knock on consequences for young people and despite stark warnings from Scotland’s colleges about what this will mean for jobs and employment.
“And now the proposed cut of £34 million to college budgets could spell disaster for young people trying to get on in life. Indeed across Dumfries and Galloway, 145 applications for 2012/13 were rejected.
“The SNP have got it badly wrong on further education at a time when they need to be investing in young people, not stifling their chances.”
