MP backs Barrachan wind farm protests

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown has backed the campaign by a group of Barrachan wind farm protestors who hit out at the appearance of a mysterious mast behind their village.

The MP visited the Machars home of Andrew Shiells last week to hear his concerns, and those of his neighbours, at the proposals by EDF Energy to “scope out” the area for a wind farm.

A wind measuring mast cropped up on a hill behind Andrew’s house and upon investigation, he discovered that Dumfries and Galloway Council planning rules hadn’t required him to be directly notified of this and that the name of the proposal - Airriequhillart Wind Farm - bore no resemblance to actual location suggested.

Andrew took the MP to visit the proposed site, and said he agreed on the inaccurate geography noted in the planning application.

The MP has also asked local people to give a “final push” for signatures for his anti-wind farm petition as it enters its final week.

The petition is set to run until Monday, October 1, and can be signed online at www.russellbrownmp.com/windfarmpetition or in Russell Brown’s office in Dumfries or Stranraer.

It was started because of increasing concern that the Scottish government is forcing more and more wind farms onto Dumfries and Galloway, against the wishes of local people.

Mr Brown said: “The response to my wind farm petition has been phenomenal. It has really struck a chord with local people who are fed up of the Scottish government running roughshod over local views.

“Now the petition is in its final week, I am asking local people to give a final push to gather as many signatures as possible. If there are any friends, relatives or colleagues who haven’t yet added their names, now is the time to get them involved. You can sign online at my website or download a paper copy.

“I would also like to remind everyone with a paper to copy to return them to my office in Dumfries by October 1.

“In the next few weeks I will be presenting my petition to the Scottish government. We need as many names as possible signed up so we make it impossible for them to ignore us.”
