Mountain rescue team opens new base

Galloway Mountain Rescue Team celebrates the official opening of its new base in Newton Stewart tomorrow (Saturday).

Thanks to the original generosity of Dumfries and Galloway Council, and the ongoing financial support of the Order of St John Scotland, the goal of having its own base, in Princes Avenue, has at last been realised.

Sir Malcolm Ross, Prior of the Most Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem (Scotland) and Lord Lieutenant of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, will officially open the base at 1pm.

Depute team leader Ken MacKenzie, who has coordinated the renovation of the building, said: “This is a significant event for the team and it gives us the opportunity to celebrate another milestone for Galloway Mountain Rescue. We would therefore be delighted if former team members, local residents and the wider community could join us in that celebration.

“Once the official opening has taken place we will be opening the base to anyone who would be interested in touring our facility from 2.30-3.30 pm.”
