Monreith to be increased by 13 new houses

THE coastal village of Monreith in the Machars will see numbers swell after councillors agreed to allow the building of 13 new houses at St Medan’s.

Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership had applied to the council for permission for ten homes and three self-build plots as an extension to the former local authority street on St Medan’s, behind the village’s traditional main street.

A report to councillors said the development would continue the “evolutionary pattern” of St Medan’s.

The report added: “It is considered that the proposal would not materially compromise the defining characteristics of Monreith.”

Objections had been received by the council towards the plans from residents, who claimed there was no attraction in the village for the type of families such a development would attract.

John Hay of Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership said: “Both of these approvals will see a high quality development including high levels of energy efficiency and micro-generation.

“With such a high demand for affordable housing in the area, the properties here will go a small way to meeting that and reducing DGHP’s current housing lists.

“This project is one of the council’s strategic priority projects for a rural community and won funding in last year’s bids for housing association grants.”
