The closure of the Merrick Leisure Centre in Newton Stewart has been extended to mid-March.
The centre was closed last week amid fears over the safety of one of the supporting pillars joining to the pool below, which had been undergoing routine maintenance.
But corrosion issues have arison, say Dumfries and Galloway Council, and the centre will now remain closed until “around March 17.”
A spokesperson from the council said: “Originally, the routine maintenance of the Merrick Leisure Centre pool was to have been completed and the pool reopened on 1 March 2014. Corrosion to the supporting pillars was discovered during the pool works and was unforeseen. This has inevitably delayed the pool’s reopening by a couple of weeks so we apologise to our customers for the inconvenience. Our Leisure and Sport team is making alternative arrangements for customers.”
A temporary fitness suite was opened to customers from Saturday in the upstairs general use area of the centre and will be open weekdays 7am-10pm, Saturdays 9am-5pm and Sundays 10am to 5pm.
Equipment available will include three treadmills, two rowers, two cross trainers, two upright bikes, one recumbent bike, dumbbells, mats, medicine balls and an ab cradle.
The Adult Resource Centre has taken the decision to suspend their café service temporarily while the work is being carried out.
