Locals announced as Olympic Torchbearers
SO far, 21 representatives across Dumfries and Galloway have been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch when it arrives in the region on 8 June.
Wigtown’s Anne Barclay, 26, will pick up the flame when it comes ashore at Cairnryan along with 67-year old Harry Waugh of New Luce before it makes its way to Stranraer where Doreen Bowie, 62, will pick it up with the help of others from outwith the region.
Stranraer’s Sally Murray, 40, will then take it through Ballantrae along with Port William’s Janine Spice, also 40.
From there, Stranraer’s Alistair Campbell, 45, will help to see it safely through Girvan along with 51-year old Debs Millington, also from Stranraer.
When the torch returns to the region on 21 June, Stranraer’s Hew Chalmers will run with it through Dumfries after turning down a slot in penrith due to the travel requirements involved, and Gatehouse of Fleet’s Gerard McNamara, 68, will safely carry it through Annan.
Around 700 representatives are still to be announced but each was nominated by people who felt they deserved their “moment to shine”, say Olympic organisers.
