Lifeboats rescue 27 people

LOCAL RNLI crews rescued 27 people from seas along the Galloway coastline in 2012, according to official figures released this week.

The RNLI five-year comparison stats show that between Stranraer, Portpatrick and Kirkcudbright lifeboat crews, a total of 25 launches were recorded in 2012, compared to 21 in 2008. Just 14 rescues were carried out in 2008.

The charity’s regional operations manager for Scotland, Andy Clift, said: “The figures show that our volunteers dedicate a huge amount of their time to saving lives at sea.

“To know that they are on call 24/7, every day of the year, is reassuring for all of us who venture out to sea around the Scottish coast.

“They spent the equivalent of 643 days on service and on exercise, and rescued a record number of people in Scotland in a year.

“But it’s not just our crew who are committed to our charity: they wouldn’t be able to carry out their lifesaving work without the incredible generosity of the public and I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all those who support the RNLI, whether by giving up their time or by making a donation.”
