Kirkcudbright Cemetery case continued

THE case of two mindless vandals who shattered 47 headstones in Kirkcudbright Cemetery has been continued until September 2nd for further background reports.

Christopher Frost, 22, and Alexander McIntosh, 19, were due to be sentenced yesterday (Thursday) but the sheriff remanded the pair in custody following the hearing at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court.

The two vandals were traced by police following their drunken rampage through the final resting place of hundreds of local family members - some dating back to 1733 - and caused 40,000 worth of damage back in June.

Gravestones were found toppled over, kicked, crumbled and two so badly damaged they are beyond repair and will cost 12,500 to replace.

So outraged were fellow members of the community that an online page was set up for people to voice their disgust at the thoughtless pair and brainstorm ideas on how to raise funds for the repairs.

Members of the community have since come together for the cause and Andrew Davis will undertake a sponsored bike ride on September 12th. Sponsor forms are available throughout Kirkcudbright, as are collection boxes which were filling up fast during the recent Arts and Crafts Trail.

Offers on the page have come from people willing to run free discos, labour for repairs and to offer refreshments for the labourers.

Andrew Richardson, District Procurator Fiscal for Kirkcudbright, said following the pair's last court appearance: "The behaviour of these men showed not only a disregard for property but a callous disdain for those whose loved one's gravestones were damaged, and for the rich history of Kirkcudbright itself.

"Desecrating a graveyard is a crime that offends all in our community. I hope their conviction brings the people of Kirkcudbright some relief in knowing that justice has been done."
