Joyrider jailed after high-speed chase
A disqualified driver who stole a car after the owner left the keys in the ignition while she unloaded her shopping was jailed for 11 months at Stranraer Sheriff Court this week.
On December 20, Marc Thomson, 27, of Benyellary, York Road, Newton Stewart, took the car from Riverside Road in the town on a joyride to Dumfries. He then drove through that town at high speed while being chased by a police car, driving over the top of roundabouts and on the wrong side of the road at junctions.
The drama continued when he crashed the car into a line of other vehicles before running away. The accused later handed himself in at the police station in Dumfries but refused to confirm he was the driver. He later confessed to five charges, including driving without insurance.
Sentencing, Sheriff Kenneth Robb also banned Thomson from driving for five years and ordered him to resit the advanced driving test.
