Jobs fears from store closures

The news that travel group Thomas Cook has announced it will cut 2500 jobs in the UK and close almost 200 stores has raised fears about the future of company’s travel agents based in the region.

Last year Thomas Cook closed one of its Dumfries stores in the Loreburn Shopping Centre, but kept open its Great King Street store. The company also has travel agents outlets in Stranraer, Annan and Castle Douglas.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said: “This news will be hugely worrying for Thomas Cook staff across our region.

“It is just over a year since the company announced the closure of one of its Dumfries travel agents and at the time many people feared this would just be the start of the cuts.

“Sadly, that has proven to be true and we can only hope that the announcement of a further 195 store closures and 2500 jobs losses doesn’t impact on local stores. High streets across the region have already been hit by so many closures in recent years and unemployment locally is spiralling out of control”.

It looks grim for another recession-hit business this week when “For Sale” signs were posted on the DE Shoe Shop premises in Newton Stewart.
