Infirmary sees 96% ‘good quality’ care in elderly
NHS Dumfries and Galloway has welcomed Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s (HIS) report on care for older people in acute care at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary – and announced a detailed improvement plan.
HIS this week published a report about its announced inspection at Dumfries Infirmary from 6th to 8th August.
The inspectors found that overall patients were positive about the care and assistance they received at Dumfries Infirmary.
Of the 82 patients who completed the inspectors’ questionnaire, 83 per cent stated that they had been given clear information about their condition and treatment. Ninety-six per cent said the quality of care they received was good.
Hazel Borland, NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s Executive Nurse Director, said: “We are firmly committed to delivering the very highest standards of care for older people at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.
“The inspectors noted some areas of strength at the hospital where we are already achieving this.
“For example, we have rolled out a successful dementia champion programme within our wards to improve care for people with dementia and a carers’ coordinator is available to provide individual support and information.
“What’s more, the inspectors saw warm, caring and friendly interactions between staff and patients, and patients were very complimentary about the quality of food and the choices on offer.”
The inspectors highlighted areas for improvement, which NHS Dumfries and Galloway is addressing as a priority.
The Executive Nurse Director said: “The report highlighted concerns about the levels of noise and confidentiality when our medical staff are speaking to individual patients at the region’s main hospital. This is something we are extremely committed to improving, particularly as we work towards the creation of a new state-of-the-art hospital. Single rooms will definitely have a positive impact.
“We will use the inspectors’ feedback to drive higher standards of care for every patient and have developed a detailed action plan to fully address all the issues they have identified.”
