Ian Bryden retires from the market

IT will be the end of an era at Newton Stewart auction market today when manager Ian Bryden retires after 33 years in the job.
Ian has been a familiar figure in and around the sales ring working for auctioneers James Craig and latterly Craig Wilson.
Galloway Gazette photographer Peter Foster called into the market on Wednesday to catch Ian at his last sale.
Ian said: “Over the years the one thing I have noticed is the decline in the numbers of hill farms and there is definitely less lifestock coming through the market these days.
“But I have to say there has been an awful lot of good stock passing through Newton Stewart. The highlight for me was the day a Blackface tup sold for £49,000. My wife has a long list of jobs for me to do and I’m looking forward to getting into the garden and there will be more time to babysit the grandchildren.”
Craig Wilson managing director Michael Craig said: “Ian has been a fixture at the market – like the posts of the pens – having been there for 33 years.
“He used to have an interest in the calf sales and, when he took over the job, he knew what the set up was.
“When he took the job on we were in the middle of reorganising the haulage company and he took charge of that.
“He is a people person, having been a special constable with the police and involved with the football club as well.
“He has been a great colleague and could be compared to Clouseau or Poirot as he could find out anything about anybody!
And you were never short of something to write with as he always carried eight pencils and 18 pens in his pocket.
“I would say Ian has performed above the call of duty and has been a very good lieutenant for me over the past 12 years.
He is now making a clean break and looking forward to spending time with his family.
“Ian is from what I would call the “old school” and his legacy is that those who will take over from him will continue to do things the same way.”
