The Merrick Trail path from Bruce’s Stone Car Park, Glentrool will be closed between the car park and Culsharg from 18th August for around one month due to tree felling operations.
The Galloway Mountain rescue team have suggested an alternative route from the car park – the start is easily found just a few metres west of the actual Merrick Trail path.
The team said: “The start is nothing more than a grassy track, but as you ascend the Fell of Eschoncan you’ll find a steep but rewarding path that once climbed provides fantastic panoramic views of Loch Trool and the nearby Galloway Hills. There is a quite distinct path as you head north to join a forest road. Head north east and follow this recently upgraded road until you rejoin the Merrick Trail about two hundred metres north west of Culsharg Bothy – and more importantly clear of the forest operations.
“Follow the path in a northwesterly direction up through the trees and onto Benyellary.”
