Happy anniversary for Stranraer centre
Stranraer Activity and Resource Centre is celebrating 25 years of providing services for people with learning disabilities. The celebrations culminated in an open day at the centre on Saturday, September 1.
Chairman of the social work services committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson, said: “Our Activity and Resource Centres are valued by the communities they serve.
“As well as day services, the Stranraer ARC has developed an award-winning cafe project in the pavilion in Agnew Park giving people skills in hospitality and catering and allowing them to take up employment in the community.
“I applaud the work of the Stranaer centre. They work tirelessly with a range of organisations to make sure people get the services, training and experiences they need. Congratu- lations on their 25th anniversary to everyone in the centre.”
The centre has had a major refurbishment recently. Alzheimer Scotland runs a service from the centre two days a week. The centre is used at weekends and evenings by community groups such as African Drumming and Scrap and Chat, and facilitates training for partner agencies such as Key Community Supports and the Richmond Fellowship Scotland.
Plans include development of Stair Park Community Garden to include a therapeutic (sensory) garden, fruit and veg garden, and learning with an opportunity to gain a qualification in horticulture.
