Grass cutting budget to be slashed
THE budget for grass cutting in the region is to be slashed by £12,000 over the next three years with an end to the hiring of seasonal staff and strimming around the perimeter of sites.
In February Dumfries and Galloway Council agreed to implement savings of over £7 million for 2012/13 and the matter was discussed at a meeting of the Wigtown Area Committee last week.
From now on park perimeters, slopes and embankments will be left leaving what is described in a report to councillors as “areas of natural growth and biodiversity”.
Until now the strimming of the perimeters of sites has been done by seasonal staff and with the axing of seasonal staff the targets can be achieved.
In a risk assessment the council are aware that there is potential for these areas to become unkempt and detract from the aesthetics of the area as well as having dog fouling and litter problems. Elected members agreed the recommendations but requested prices for a cut and lift. The parks affected in the Mid Galloway area will be Blairmount and Douglas parks in Newton Stewart, Minnigaff Park, Palnure Park, KGV park Creetown, Castle hill Park, Whithorn, Lightlands Park, Wigtown as well as parks in Port William, Isle of Whithorn, Kirkinner and Kirkcowan.
In Stranraer and North Rhins and Wigtown West the following areas will not be strimmed; area surrounding the practice football pitch and the wild area opposite Skate Park in Stair Park, the area on the south west perimeter of KGV Park, both in Stranraer ; Lady Stair park, Glenluce; New Luce ark, Dunragit Park; Castle Kennedy Park; Cairnryan park; Kirkcolm Park; Leswalt park; Lochans Park; Portpatrick park; Stoneykirk Park and Sandhead Park.
