Grandad killed daughter’s fiance after argument
PAUL McCann killed his daughter’s fiance after he made a remark which made her cry, the High Court in Glasgow heard.
The 56-year-old admitted the culpable homicide of David Brown at a house in McGregor Drive, Minnigaff, Newton Stewart, on October 15, 2011
His fiancee Nichole McCann, whom he was due to marry next month, has not spoken to her father since he knifed her lover to death.
McCann, now of 4 Sorby Road, Adrrossan, was originally charged with murder, but his plea to a reduced charge of culpable homicide was accepted by the Crown
Advocate depute Douglas Fairley, prosecuting, said: “The two men had a disagreement about a remark which caused Nichole McCann to cry and this led to a fight.
“Several witnesses described the accused having a knife in his hand and Mr Brown falling to the ground.”
The killing was witnessed by 18-year-old Scott Brown, one of Mr Brown’s sons from a previous relationship.
He told police of seeing his dad’s legs turn to jelly and him staggering back bleeding.
The court heard that the fatal wound was to Mr Brown’s left shoulder which cut through a major artery .
Mr Brown remained conscious for 20 minutes after he was stabbed, but by the time a GP arrived he had no pulse and his pupils were fixed and dilated.
The nearest hospital with a surgical facility is 45 miles away. The first 999 call was made at midnight, but ambulance paramedics did not arrive on the scene until 12.43am.
They tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Mr Brown and he was pronounced dead at 1.10am..
Pathologists said that the least amount of force would have been needed as the knife only passed through skin and soft tissue.
During a police interview McCann admitted having a lot to drink and said Mr Brown had grabbed him by the throat.
He said the next thing he remembered was having a knife in his hand. - he said he believed it may have been sitting on the draining board next to the kitchen sink – and then seeing Mr Brown fall to the ground.
The court heard that Nichole McCann and Mr Brown had a three-year-old son and were due to marry in July 2012.
The judge Lord Bannatyne was handed victim impact statements from Mr Brown’s two sons Scott and Euan, 16, his fiancee Miss McCann and his mother Margaret Agnew,.
Mr Fairley added: “Mr Brown was much loved. His death had and continues to have a devastating effect on his family.”
Lord Bannatyne deferred sentence for background reports and will sentenced McCann later this month at the High Court in Edinburgh.
