Furniture Project to close

THE Furniture Project in Newton Stewart will close in the spring due to financial constraints.

However, its Stranraer base will continue to operate as normal and the board of directors is looking at ways to deliver the service across the Machars from there.

Project manager Paul Smith said he anticipated no redundancies with the closure and that that work was continuing to ensure volunteer placements were still available.

He said: "Our board of directors do acknowledge that this is a well used service and will be sadly missed. The closure of the Newton Stewart Centre is a proactive move to ensure the Furniture Project can continue to operate and deliver our current range of services across Wigtownshire whilst working within budget constraints."

"There is Government policy for voluntary groups, of which we are considered to be one to operate as social enterprise. This is with a view to reducing the amount of support funding we require to operate in favour of income generated from the sale of products and services we offer to the public. Along with a decreasing pool of funding from public and private funding bodies means we have less and less funds to operate with annually."

Paul said discussions were also taking place with regard to relocating the current Stranraer base: "If and when this takes place we will make a further announcement. We would also like to take this opportunity to advise members of the public that our centre in Stranraer remains open during the period of regeneration within the Dicks Hill area of Stranraer.

"Our directors and staff team would like to thank members of the public and local agencies for their ongoing support and understanding and for their support, assistance and generosity over the past 12 years and we look forward to providing services to you over the next 12 years and beyond."

A meeting was due to take place in Newton Stewart last week of members of the public with a view to opposing the closure.
