Food Train calls for volunteers as it expands into Newton Stewart

Dumfries and Galloway charity Food Train is extending its award-winning befriending service for older people into Newton Stewart and the DG8 postcode area and has issued an appeal for volunteers as it prepares to take the service live in the area soon.

Food Train, which celebrates its 19th birthday this July, already offers a home delivery grocery shopping service to assist its customers to live independently at home for longer.

Food Train Friends Project Manager Scott McGill said: “This is a really exciting development for us and builds on the services we currently provide to older people across the region. The lack of a befriending service for our region’s older population has been highlighted so often in recent years and our regional demographics only make that need even greater. Thanks to significant funding from the Big Lottery recently, we are delighted we have been able to respond to that need by extending Food Train Friends into the DG8 postcode area, another excellent example of the strength of our voluntary sector here in Dumfries and Galloway. “We are now actively looking for volunteers to provide one-to-one, telephone and/or group befriending services. If you enjoy talking and helping others, are a good listeners and have a couple of hours each week or fortnight that you could spend with an older person, then we would love to hear from you.

“Our volunteers will be fully supported by Food Train staff, training and guidance will be provided, and out-of-pocket expenses will be paid. We are looking for adult volunteers who can provide consistent and reliable support to help our older customers experience social interaction on a regular basis. All our volunteers must also undergo a (PVG) Disclosure Scotland membership application to ensure a safe and secure service is provided.”

Anyone who wants to find out more should call Karen Barbour, the new Befriending Development Officer (West) at Food Train Friends who is based in Newton Stewart on 01671 401346 or email friends@thefoodtrain.co.uk. Karen will also be available for a chat at a Food Train volunteers’ recruitment and information day being held on Friday 11th April 2014 at Sainsbury’s in Newton Stewart.
