Food project is growing

editorial image

A NEW community group has
been set up to produce homegrown food for anyone to access.

Incredible Edible Gatehouse is based on a model pioneered by Todmorden, a town in west Yorkshire, which in 2008 started what has become the Incredible Edible movement.

The aims are to make use of
underused areas of the community and public spaces to grow food for all to eat. The group wants “to get closer to the food we eat, education and community involvement”.

Incredible Edible volunteers in
Gatehouse have made 10 grow boxes at the community centre with wood and nails donated by Rainton farm, and with donations of herbs by the public.

Last Friday, Mary Clear, a co-founder of the Incredible Edible movement was at Gatehouse of Fleet primary to inspire community growing.

Gatehouse Primary and Incredible Edible Gatehouse (IEG), with support from South West Dyking Association, have been making a dyking herb bed and are hoping to let the children learn this is country skill. Hopefully, it will inspire the next generation of dykers.

One of the pupils made a poster asking for dyking stone which was donated by a local resident. The schools eco group has been using 3D objects to design structures for raised veg beds.
