Food for thought in Wigtown

Wigtown continues its Whisky, Words and Wisdom Spring Festival this weekend with a first for the town – two days celebrating all things food.

And a highlight will be award-winning writer and television presenter Catherine Brown who will be in conversation with local Mike Marshall, long-time producer and director of ‘Scotland’s Larder.’

Together they will be highlighting many of the local food producers featured in the programme, including the Galloway Smokehouse and Irving’s Baker, among others.

They’ll also be discussing the regional food scene and the role of the Savour the Flavours initiative and farmers’ markets.

Mike said: “We’ll be asking some of the food producers we featured how they have managed to survive the challenging economic times. Is our local larder, its specialities and heritage strong enough to withstand the cut-throat competition from elsewhere?”

Kick-off is at 2pm in the County Buildings tomorrow (Saturday), but there will also be free cookery demonstrations from private chef Maria Salzmann. Maria, who provides the fabulous food for the Galloway Supper Club, will be showing how to make canapes and tapas at two free sessions on Sunday at 11.30am and at 1pm.
