Fire and police officers on alert following Wigtown fires

POLICE say they are working in partnership with the fire serice to tackle a the perpetrator of a number of deliberate fires set within Wigtown over the past six weeks.

The fires have been started in a number of outbuildings and outside a shop in the evening and early hours of the morning.

Inspector Stuart Davidson, Area Commander, Newton Stewart said: “We will continue our enquiries into these incidents along with the fire service and would urge anyone with any information to contact their local Police Station on 0845 600 5701 or alternatively call Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.”

Fire Station Manager, Keith Murray said: “Quite simply, people who commit willful fire raising are putting lives at risk – their own lives, the lives of members of the public and the lives of our firefighters who are sent to tackle the incidents.”

Police Crime Reduction Officer Lynne Steel and Fire Station Manager Keith Murray would like to offer the following safety message to all and urge people to:

1.Be vigilant within their community and to report any suspicious activity especially in the early morning.

2.Isolate any non essential electrical equipment within the shed.

3.That the homes have working smoke alarms.

4.Families have an escape plan from all rooms in their property.

5.Keep their sheds/property locked where possible (hasp and padlock).

6.Consideration should be given to shed alarms, and the use of grills or heavy mesh wiring on windows.

7.Check your household insurance covers property kept in a shed or outbuilding. If anyone would like any further advice a free fire safety check can be carried out by calling 01387 252 222 or a free crime survey can be arranged with a local Crime Reduction officer by calling 0845 600 5701.
