Fergusson welcomes cockle talks

GALLOWAY and West Dumfries MSP Alex Fergusson has welcomed the news that Marine Scotland is to invite public bodies and local stakeholders to a meeting on 10th August to discuss how the illegal poaching that has been taking place locally can be better policed.

He said: “While I very much welcome those discussions, I sincerely hope that the meeting will also discuss how to open a legal fishery in the shortest possible timescale. Not only would such a fishery be of lasting benefit for the local economy, but it would also do a great deal to keep illegal poachers at bay.

“This situation has gone on for far too long. There is a potential industry here that could be of great benefit to the local economy. It is high time the Scottish Government took steps to let it flourish.”
