Farmer in shearing honours
LOCAL Blackface sheep farmer David Ferguson of Drannandow Farm, Minnigaff recently received two honours at the World Golden Shears Championships in Wales.
As part of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show in July, he represented Scotland for the second time as the national blade shearer in both the individual and team events.
The flying Scotsman achieved fourth place in the World in both classes, giving him the all time highest ever position of a shearer from the northern hemisphere in the history of the competition.
David took part in two events leading up to the finals finishing in third place at the Royal Highland Show and winning the Lochearnhead tournament for the third time. He then joined the other five squad members who had qualified to represent the nation.
David was absolutely delighted with his achievements. hesaid: "My target was to reach the semi-finals and to better my 2008 Norwegian result of 11th place but never thought fourth was possible."
The hill farmer has more recently become a regular user of the machine and pretty much 'hung up' his blades so this result was even more special considering he was competing against full time shearers.
Stranraer Agricultural Society invited David to make a guest appearance at this years show to give a hand shearing demonstration as part of the entertainment programme. He was joined by his shearing side kick Wullie Hurcomb from Barnvannoch who showcased his talents on the machine. Wullie also had a successful shearing season finishing top of the Scottish Junior Circuit and was placed third in the Junior event at the Royal Welsh Show.
