A 40-YEAR old farmer was airlifted to Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital on Wednesday after his tractor collided with a van on the Baltersan straight between Newton Stewart and Wigtown. The man was seriously hurt in the lunchtime crash but police said there was no threat to his life.

Fire crews removed the farmer, believed to have been from Baltersan Farm, from the tipped tractor using hydraulic cutting equipment. Two people were in the van and they also received medical treatment.

A nearby drain was dammed to prevent fertiliser spilled in the impact and oil from the overturned tractor from entering the watercourse. The road was closed for some time to allow for a police investigation and reopened about 8pm on Wednesday.
