Exam results show improvements for region

DUMFIRES and Galloway’s senior school pupils have shown significant improvement in their exam results this year.

This was the news from the council’s director of education services as results were received on Tuesday, showing the region to have made vast strides based on recent years.

Colin Grant said: “Having been director for five years I can say that collectively this is the best set of results I have seen in that time. We are particularly pleased with Maths and English given the focus we are having on numeracy and literacy. I would also seek to reassure youngsters who have been disappointed that they should contact their schools where help will be on hand to make arrangements to consider options and amend choices for next year.”

Mr Grant added that following techinical difficulties after a lightning strike at council HQ in Dumfries, his team had been unable to respond to enquiries regarding a timescale for clothing grant payments.

He said: “I wish to allay anxiety by informing families that cheques should have been posted first class on Wednesday to make sure these payments reach homes in plenty time for the beginning of the new term. The Education Committee decided that the grant payment for 2012/2013 would be £80 per pupil, an increase of £20 from the previous year, and one of the highest payments in Scotland.”
