Douglas Ewart High School Peace Ambassadors recently presented their skills programme at last Saturday’s Rotary Peace Conference held in the Scottish Parliament Building.
Entitled “Take a Chance on Peace” this was a first and unique conference to be delivered in Scotland.
Peace Ambassador pupils from both the Douglas Ewart and Kirkcudbright Academy helped to formulate the programme with local Rotarians Jean and Keith Best.
Keith Best said: “This was a terrific conference for young people by young people, Rotary Peace Fellows from the US and Mexico, Government Presiding Officer, representatives from the police, the legal, medical, social work and media professions, university students, school pupils, Rotarians and the general public.”
The full Peace Project Programme is going to be launched at the Rotary World Convention in Sydney on June 3 by Jean and Keith Best following the very successful pilots at both the Douglas Ewart High School and Kirkcudbright Academy. The young people from both schools and some who are now university students were campaigning that the skills which they have learned are as important as literacy and numeracy and should be included in the school curriculum. Of the 180 registrations one third of the audience were school and university students.
